Finding Refunds

Federal and Indiana Refund Assistance

Please follow the suggestions below when you believe your tax refunds have been delayed. Generally, online services to help you find the status of your refunds are focused on the most recent tax year. If you need information about a refund for a prior year tax return, email the TAP for assistance.

Federal Refunds

The IRS provides this web site to check on refunds.

In order to use this site successfully, you should have at hand your copy of the tax return for which you are seeking refund information.  If it tells you that it sent the refund to you on a certain date and time, print the screen information and then take that to the bank or wherever the IRS said it sent the money.

When the above does not provide useful information,  make these phone calls in order:

  • IRS number: 1-800-829-4477 (automated)
  • IRS number: 1-800-829-1954 (refund help line)

Be sure to have with you before using the phone your copy of the tax return you are inquiring about.  If it says that it has not found your return or processed it yet, email the TAP with what you have done up to that point.

Indiana Refunds

Be certain to have at hand your copy of the Indiana tax return you filed.  Then use this site to obtain Indiana refund information.  Supply the information asked for from your return copy.

If the web site does not supply satisfactory information, make these phone calls in order:

  • IN DOR automated refund information:  (317) 233-4018 -- available 24/7
  • IN DOR human staffed refund information: (317) 232-2240 -- available only Monday thru Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Be sure to have with you before using the phone your copy of the tax return you are inquiring about.  If it says that it has not found your return or processed it yet, email the TAP with what you have done up to that point.
