Tax Assistance Program

TAP

Annually, accounting students from the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College assist low-income and disabled taxpayers with preparation of their tax returns through Notre Dame's Vivian Harrington Gray Tax Assistance Program (TAP).

Founded in 1972 by Professor Ken Milani and a handful of students, TAP has grown into a wide reaching program. In 2008, the TAP program involved more than 90 student volunteers as well as several faculty members and local accountants who staffed 11 area service centers. Volunteers also formed “SWAT” teams to serve disabled taxpayers in their homes and hospital rooms. In 2009, the TAP personnel filed more than 3,800 income tax returns in the Michiana area. More than 20 Notre Dame alumni clubs have adopted the TAP service program to help their neighbors in cities throughout the nation.

The Tax Assistance Program has helped many taxpayers and provided opportunities for students to hone their skills, lend their service and develop a deeper understanding for the lives of their clients.

There is no charge for the service, which is supported by funds from Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business and supplies provided by the Internal Revenue Service and the Indiana Department of Revenue. Further information may be obtained by visiting the TAP Web site or calling 574-631-7863.
