University Academic Awards by College & Major

COLLEGE LEVEL AWARDS

The Peter Brady Award. This award was established to honor past faculty member Peter Brady, and is conferred on a senior with outstanding academic performance and one of the highest grade point averages.

The Dean’s Award. The highest award given to a graduating senior in the Mendoza College of Business, the Dean’s Award winner is nominated by the Department Chairmen and selected by the Dean’s Office. The recipient is ranked in the top 5% of his/her class and has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the University and the College.

Eugene D. Fanning Awards. Given to a senior man and woman who demonstrate exceptional achievement in business communication, excellence in writing, speaking, listening and interpersonal communication, and who demonstrate leadership potential, initiative, integrity and respect for the dignity and rights of others.

The Charles G. Morrow Award for Business Excellence. This award was established by the five children of the late Charles G. Morrow, Class of 1938, in honor of his contributions to Notre Dame and the business community. Given to a graduating senior in the Mendoza College of Business, this award recognizes business excellence through documented service, leadership, and personal integrity. 

ACCOUNTANCY AWARDS

The Accountancy Chairman’s Award. This award recognizes a senior or graduate student for outstanding service to the Department of Accountancy, based on recommendations of the faculty.

The Accountancy Faculty Award. This award recognizes an outstanding senior in the Department of Accountancy in the Mendoza College of Business. This award is given to an outstanding senior with one of the highest cumulative grade point averages.

The Barth Award. This award is designed to assist students who have accepted a full-time volunteer experience after they leave Notre Dame or who plan to work for a not-for-profit organization (e.g., Alliance for Catholic Education, Red Cross, Teach for America).

The Brother Cyprian C.S.C. Awards. These awards are conferred annually on graduating accounting seniors in recognition of academic achievement. The awards are granted in honor of Holy Cross Brother Cyprian O’Hare (“Brother Zip”), who helped to launch Notre Dame’s accountancy program in 1895 and later served as department chair. These awards are given to graduating seniors with the highest grade point averages.

The Crowe Horwath LLP Outstanding Accounting Student Scholarship award. This scholarship recognizes a junior entering their senior year based on major and overall GPA and for exhibiting leadership skills.

The Crowe Horwath LLP Outstanding MSA Student Scholarship award. This scholarship recognizes a senior entering the MSA program based on major and overall GPA and for exhibiting leadership skills.  

The Tara K. Deutsch Award. This annual award is given to an accounting senior who has displayed exemplary social consciousness and devotion to assisting the less fortunate. This award is based on faculty recommendations.

The James Dincolo Awards. These awards are conferred annually on graduating accounting seniors in recognition of academic achievement. The awards honor former accountancy professor James Dincolo and are funded by an endowment in his name. These awards are given to graduating seniors with the highest cumulative grade point averages.  

The Hamilton Award for Accountancy. Founded by Robert L. Hamilton ’34, Racine, Wisconsin, this award is given to the senior with the highest cumulative grade point average.

The Elmer Layden Awards. Given annually to graduating accounting seniors in recognition of academic achievement. These awards are funded by the Elmer Layden Jr. Endowed Fund and given to graduating seniors with the highest cumulative grade averages.

FINANCE AWARDS

The Paul F. Conway Award. An annual award given to a senior in the Department of Finance who embodies the characteristics that define our tradition of excellence: a person of keen intellect who enriches the ideals of Notre Dame.

The Herman Crown Award. An annual award made by the Department of Finance in memory of the late Herman Crown and given to the senior finance major with the highest overall grade point average.

The Le Clair Eells Awards. An annual award given to senior finance majors for outstanding leadership.

The Hamilton Award for Finance. Founded by Robert L. Hamilton ’34, Racine, Wisconsin, this award is given to the seniors with the highest cumulative grade point average.

The Raymond P. Kent Awards. An annual award given to senior finance majors for outstanding performance in finance classes.

The Wall Street Journal Award. Given to a senior in the Department of Finance for rendering outstanding service to the department.

MANAGEMENT AWARDS

The Justin Harris Brumbaugh Memorial Award. This award was established in 1998 by the graduating students, the faculty of the Department of Management, friends and family to honor the memory of Justin Brumbaugh who was a member of the graduating class, the president of the MIS club and the student with the highest cumulative grade point average. Justin died unexpectedly 3 months before his graduation. This award is given annually to the MIS/IT Management senior whom classmates select as having had the most impact on their lives during their stay at Notre Dame.

The Hamilton Award for Management. Founded by Robert L. Hamilton ’34, Racine, Wisconsin, this award is given to the outstanding Consulting and Entrepreneurship senior with the highest cumulative grade point average.  

The Management Award. This award is given annually to the outstanding IT Management senior in the Department of Management with the highest cumulative grade point average.

MARKETING AWARDS

The David Appel Award. This award honors the memory of David L. Appel, former chairman of the Department of Marketing and long time colleague. David died in June 1999, of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 56. The award commemorates Dave’s exemplary service contribution to Logan Center, the International Summer Special Olympics and several other community organizations. The award is given at the discretion of the faculty to a student engaged in significant community service at Notre Dame and in the greater Michiana area.  

The Wesley C. Bender Award for Outstanding Performance in Marketing.  Named after the first chairman of the Department of Marketing here at ND, who joined the faculty in 1931 and retired in ’73. This award is given to the student with the highest grade point average in Marketing courses.

Yusaku Furuhashi AwardThis award honors an esteemed colleague who was a pioneer in the area of international marketing.  The award is given on a calendar year basis to a student who, in the estimation of the faculty, writes the best essay capturing the marketing insights gained by the semester abroad experience.  The winner each year may be either a junior or senior, depending upon the dates spent overseas. 

The Paul D. Gilbert Award for Leadership. This award is given at the discretion of the faculty to the Marketing student who has excelled in various extracurricular activities.

The Hamilton Award for Marketing. Founded by Robert L. Hamilton ’34, Racine, Wisconsin, this award is given to the senior with the highest cumulative grade point average.

The John R. Malone Award. This award is given to the junior marketing major with the highest cumulative grade point average and conferred on the winner during his/her senior year.

The Robert M. Satterfield Award. This award is given to a student for “bringing enthusiasm, integrity and a spirit of teamwork to the classroom” as voted by members of the graduating class.
