Media and Entertainment Officers 2010

The ND MBA is one of the most active clubs at Notre Dame MBA, organizing several major events every year and offering students once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will surely highlight their MBA experience.

Mission

The Media & Entertainment Club is a student-run organization dedicated to increasing the awareness of all media- and entertainment-related industries and career opportunities among the Notre Dame MBA community, as well as building relationships between students, faculty, and alumni with common interests in these industries.

Professional

  • Act as the focal point for all M&E related topics and interests at Notre Dame MBA 
  •  Create programs to support career development
  •  Establish a forum for discussion of industry trends and relevant topics
  •  Attract major M&E companies to recruit at Notre Dame MBA 
  •  Help major M&E companies appreciate the value that a Notre Dame MBA can provide

Club Officers

Susan Guttler - President

With a genuine passion for media and entertainment, Susan has worked with Cosmopolitan magazine, MTV Asia, Universal Pictures and most recently, with NBC Sports during the national broadcast of Notre Dame football. Susan’s career goals are in integrated marketing and branded entertainment for television.

Carl Durrenberger - Vice President of Marketing

Carl Durrenberger is VP of Marketing for the Media and Entertainment Club. He has co-created two half-hour television shows, written one full-length screenplay, and is currently writing an action thriller in conjunction with Ilium Entertainment in Los Angeles. His career interests are in marketing for motion picture and television, driving product and property development to meet evolving and emerging audience needs.

Robert Hoffman - Vice President of Finance

Rob’s diverse experience includes filmmaking, portfolio management and growth strategy consulting. After studying film and economics at Northwestern University, Rob began a career in financial strategy, during which time he worked at Morgan Stanley and a boutique management consultancy in Chicago. Now, as a first-year MBA student, Rob is focused on working on the Strategy side of entertainment industry.

Jonathan Retartha - Vice President of Alumni Relations

Jonathan's media experience began at Notre Dame as an undergrad, where he developed ND’s television network into a 24-hour programming run entirely by students. After graduating in 2007, Jonathan went on to receive his a Masters in Media Studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. As VP of Alumni Relations, Jonathan is charged with developing the relationship between Mendoza and Notre Dame's collection of alumni working in the media industry.

Joe Tingey - Vice President of Promotions

Joseph Tingey spent the last two years designing video games for children. He hopes some day to design a game to teach kids math and foreign languages, thus sparing future generations the torture of Ms. Thurman's Spanish I class. In addition to design, Joe enjoys editing short films, photography, and is a voraciously nerdy consumer of all things media.

Department of Film, Theater and Television

The primary goals of the Notre Dame Department of Film, Television, and Theater are to inspire intellectual inquiry and nurture creativity. They offer both a scholarly and a creative context for the general liberal arts student at Notre Dame as well as those students seeking intensive preparation for advanced study in these fields. The hands-on nature of our curriculum, coupled with a very high degree of student-faculty interaction, provides students with a singular educational opportunity at a university known for its teaching excellence.

iNDustry Alliance

Founded by Christina Glorioso '92 and Lydia Antonini '96 with support from Professor Ted Mandell from the Film, Theater, and Television Department, and the Alumni Association, the mission of iNDustry Alliance is to:

  • Connect Notre Dame Alumni within the media and entertainment industries in order to support industry networking opportunities and career development for professionals.
  • Foster new talent through mentoring and career development of current ND students within the entertainment and media industries.
  • Strengthen the bond between the University of Notre Dame and its alumni in the entertainment and media industries.
  • Give back to the community and Notre Dame through donating time, talents, and unique experiences related to entertainment, media and performing arts.

Media Partner

The Observer

The Observer is the student-run, daily print and online newspaper serving Notre Dame and Saint Mary's. The organization was founded in 1966 by students at Notre Dame and publishes stories about local events and issues that affect students and staff members of both institutions. As an Associated Press newspaper, The Observer prints wire stories and graphics to inform readers of national and world news and sports.

2009 Milestones

ND MBA Media & Entertainment Club presents Charlie Ebersol

Charlie Ebersol is a documentary film and television producer based in Los Angeles. He is currently in production on the television show “The Wanted,” and serves as its Executive Producer. “The Wanted” is a groundbreaking television project that brings together an elite team of American operatives who hunt down war criminals and terrorists worldwide.

Prior to producing for television, Ebersol produced three well-received documentary films that garnered both industry acclaim and award recognition. Ebersol’s first documentary, “Ithuteng (Never Stop Learning),” focused on inspirational stories of South African students ravaged by life-threatening abuse and disease. The film won various humanitarian awards and raised millions of dollars to help individuals through the “Child Education Fund” in Africa.

Ebersol followed his first foray into the documentary world with a sports documentary, “Don’t Look Down,” about Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White. He also produced “Tradition Never Graduates,” a documentary about the Notre Dame football team and their ardent fans. Ebersol is a film graduate of Notre Dame.

Ebersol has also worked in various capacities in the entertainment arena, both at the studio level and in the independent production world. He currently is partnered in the film and television production company Ebersol, Lanigan and Hansen.

A Look into the Marketing of MTV Rockband: Christina Glorioso

Christina Glorioso, ND Class of '95 and MBA '99, has worked at MTV Networks since 2003, currently as Vice President of Marketing Partnerships for Program Enterprises. She oversees marketing and promotional partnerships for MTV, Vh1, CM T and Logo off-channel properties including Rock Band and other video games, virtual worlds, direct-to-video movies and music consumer products.

Rock Band is the #1 selling game (by revenue) in 2008 and has transformed the music industry through its DLC (downloadable content) – new music tracks available every week. MTV Networks is the first major media/entertainment company to earn an Emmy for a virtual property, winning the Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for Creation of Nontraditional Programs or Platforms for Virtual Laguna Beach.

Prior to her current role, Christina worked at MTVN Brand Solutions(formerly Viacom Plus), the marketing and business development team representing the Viacom portfolios, where she earned a reputation for being a creative business leader. Christina’s strategic approach and commitment to understanding her client’s business have resulted in innovative media marketing campaigns for major clients including AT&T, Daimler Chrysler, and Wal-Mart. Prior to joining Viacom, Christina was a force in corporate marketing sales at Clear Channel Entertainment (now Live Nation) and SFX Sports representing various sports and music properties.

Participating firms include: Aon, Cummins, Draftfcb, E&J Gallo, eLoyalty, MTV Networks, Starcom MediaVest Group, Target Corporation, Towers Productions, US Department of Justice, and Whirlpool Corporation.

Laura Lavigne, Associate Director and Diversity Recruiting and Relations at ESPN, and Tim Corrigan, executive producer of NBA Basketball at ESPN, present an informal information session to explain ESPN's hiring procedures and employment opportunities.

Doug Lieblien, Emmy-nominated Writer & Co-Executive Producer of Hannah Montana for Disney/The Disney Channel presents "Crazytown Incorporated."

Currently writer and Co-Executive Producer of The Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, Douglas Lieblein is a three-time Emmy nominee and multiple Teen Choice Award winner. He earned his B.A. in Acting/Theater Arts at California State University Northridge, where he was nominated for ACTF’s Irene Ryan Award for his performance of the title role in Los Angeles area theaters. He later earned his M.F.A. in Communication Arts at Loyola Marymount University and stated his career as a writer and producer of half-hour comedy television.

inDUstry Alliance invites Scott Mitsui (ND ’92) - Making the Perfect Trailer: A Behind the Scenes Look at Movie Marketing

Scott Mitsui is the award winning producer of some of the most memorable recent movie trailers, including A Serious Man, Lost In Translation, Milk and Crash. His workshop presented a rare opportunity to discover the arsenal of techniques deployed in the production of trailers that form such a vital ingredient in the representation and marketing of modern motion pictures.Step-by-step, Scott will use video and other raw elements to de-construct and reveal the alchemy, philosophy and mechanics behind the creation of that perfect trailer.

MBA Media and Entertainment Conference 2010

The MBA Media and Entertainment Conference is the premiere event for business school students focusing on the media, entertainment, and technology industries. Each February, MBA students from the five founding schools and across the country gather in New York for a full day of speakers and panels covering all aspects of the industry -- from entertainment finance and venture capital investing to marketing, digital distribution, and gaming. The conference serves as a valuable educational experience and networking opportunity for attending students - in previous years, MEC has hosted over 600 students from 40 different business schools.

New York City Industry Trek

Notre Dame’s savviest MBAs will gather in New York City to meet with top executives from the entertainment and media industries. The New York City Industry Trek will be an event that brings a group of highly motivated Notre Dame MBAs to explore careers in media and entertainment. They will meet with top executives from three of the industry's most influential firms: HBO, NBC Universal and Viacom.

Trade Journals

The ND MBA Media and Entertainment Club hopes to be able to provide students with resources for furthering knowledge in the ever-changing media landscape by providing access and subscriptions to industry journals such as:

Quarterly Meetings

In addition to our offsite events, we plan to host quarterly meetings in the business school, which will provide students with the opportunity to meet and share ideas, learn about internship and full time positions for MBA students, and best practices for the interview and job search process.

Speaker Series Partnership with FTT Talks

The MBA Media and Entertainment Club will continue our partnership with FTT Talks to connect students with industry professionals, to share their experiences and give students an opportunity to make connections with top executives in the entertainment, media, and sports industries.
