School, Inc.

School Inc. LogoSchool, Inc was founded on the principle that all students deserve a fair chance to succeed and all schools are critical entities in which this can happen.  A collaborative program between University of Notre Dame MBA students and the South Bend Community School Corporation, School, Inc. unites motivated MBA students with diligent elementary school students. Through its two flagship programs, SUCCESS and Money Math, School, Inc. reaches dozens of children every week.

SUCCESS

SUCCESS is a daily afternoon class period where elementary school students review with volunteers the math concepts they find most challenging. Volunteer MBA students provide one-on-one assistance, participate in small group projects and games, and interact with entire classes of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students. Helping with fractions, arithmetic, percentages, and measurement are common focus areas, although the mentorship and encouragement provided are truly unlimited in scope.

The classroom sessions go from 1:30 to about 2:15 pm every day, and our students typically volunteer once or twice a week. No long term commitment is required for participation. If you would like more information or are interested in signing up for SUCCESS please contact us.

Money Math

Money Math is an innovative educational concept that combines language- and inquiry-based learning approaches with professional mentorship and volunteerism. Using business and money as the vehicle, volunteers demonstrate how important math is in our daily lives and why we should all strive to fully understand and appreciate it. Through the Money Math program, students learn critical math concepts enjoyably, through collaborative discussions, small projects, games, and story-telling. These weekly lessons will be taught to local elementary school students by MBA volunteers.

We are currently developing and testing the curriculum for Money Math. A fairly detailed framework and curriculum manual is being developed to enable volunteers without teaching experience to conduct a lesson. That’s correct: no experience required. If you would like to help pioneer this new program, please contact us. Volunteer time commitment will vary based on level of involvement.
