The Indiana University Health Goshen Board of Directors announces the appointment of Randal “Randy” Christophel to the position of president and chief executive officer. Christophel has served IU Health Goshen, formerly Goshen Health System, in an executive leadership capacity for 17 years, first as chief financial officer and then as chief operating officer. He enjoys unanimous support from the board as he succeeds longtime, retiring president and CEO James O. Dague. Christophel’s administration officially begins on February 20, 2012.
“Randy Christophel has been instrumental in the delivery of outstanding patient care, in the implementation of financially sound practices, and in the achievement of unprecedented levels of Colleague workplace satisfaction,” says Mark King, chair of the board of directors of IU Health Goshen. “His visionary approach has helped IU Health Goshen become a nationally recognized, award-winning health system known for its innovation.”
Patient quality and satisfaction scores for IU Health Goshen have consistently ranked in the 95th percentile range, and the organization has gone from the brink of bankruptcy 17 years ago to a financially secure and thriving institution today.
In addition to the endorsement by the IU Health Goshen Board of Directors, Christophel received a strong vote of support from Dan Evans, CEO of Indiana University Health system, the statewide network of hospitals. “Randy brings a commitment to quality patient care and financial stewardship that inspires confidence within the IU Health System,” says Evans. “His integrity and commitment to developing positive partnerships will provide both the community and the hospital with stable leadership in the days ahead.”
Christophel earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Purdue University and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame. He is also a Certified Public Accountant, is board certified in healthcare management, and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
When asked about his vision for the future, Christophel spoke of an approach that meets the needs of an ever-changing industry. “As health care seeks to innovate and create integrated networks of care, collaborative partnerships become essential to the future and growth of the system. I look forward to strengthening and building on partnerships with the medical staff and our community business owners as we meet the health care needs of this region. ”
In selecting Christophel, the board emphasized the continued importance of growing and developing leadership at all levels within the system. “This CEO selection reflects our continued commitment to engage in active leadership development and succession planning,” says Board Chair Mark King. “For the past three years, the board and the leadership team have worked hard to ensure that the system is ready for this transition.”
Retiring CEO James O. Dague also expressed support for Christophel’s selection. “Having worked with Randy for the past 17 years, I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that he is becoming the CEO,” says Dague. “His vision for health care and his values-based perspective will serve the community and the region well in the days ahead.”
