Deloitte LLP named Byron Spruell, a former Notre Dame football co-captain, to head an expanded Midwestern regional office here that consolidates positions formerly held by Vice Chairman Deborah DeHaas and two other managing partners.

Mr. Spruell, 48, is a 17-year veteran of the auditing and consulting firm who previously was global managing director of financial advisory at parent Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd. and chief of staff to its CEO, Barry Salzberg.

Deloitte last month combined its Chicago-based central and Houston-based Mid-America regions, creating a 17-state, 31-office group with 14,000 professionals, about one fourth of Deloitte's U.S. total. Some 4,000 are in Chicago.

Mr. Spruell, an Ohio native, succeeds Ms. DeHaas as central region managing partner, Anne Taylor as Mid-America region managing partner and Stacy Janiak as Chicago office managing partner.

"It's like a dream role for me," Mr. Spruell said in an interview, characterizing the combined regions as the firm's fastest-growing and in little need of redirection. He said he will emphasize more collaboration and teamwork, calling on his sports background for inspiration.
