John Petersen has worked at the National War College, the Institute for National Security Studies, the Office of Secretary of Defense and National Security Counsel. He is the founder of the Arlington Institute, a nonprofit, future-oriented research organization; a contributor to Professional Pilot Magazine; the director of the Charles A. Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation; a member of the Global Business Network; and a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences.
