BIO
Viva Bartkus is an Associate Professor of Management at the University of Notre Dame. Bartkus graduated summa cum laude from Yale University with master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Economics, and completed her doctorate and master’s in International Relations at Oxford University while on a Rhodes Scholarship. Her current research and teaching interests concentrate on two areas: the leadership approaches most effective in solving complex business problems and the social capital of communities that enables collaboration.
Bartkus’ published works include
The Dynamic of Secession (Cambridge University Press, 1999), which investigates nationalism, self-determination, and why groups attempt succession. In
Getting It Right: Notre Dame on Leadership and Judgement in Business (Jossey-Bass, 2008), Bartkus and co-author Edward Conlon contend that successful business leadership depends on values-based problem-solving habits of mind.
Social Capital: Reaching Out, Reaching In (Edward Elgar, 2008), co-authored with James Davis, explores the underpinnings of networks, norms, trust, and social capital in organizations. Prior to joining the faculty at Notre Dame, Bartkus spent 10 years in consulting at McKinsey & Co., with the last four years as a partner.
