As senior vice president, Shawn O’Grady leads all customer activities for General Mills in the U.S. He leads the nearly 2,000 sales professionals charged with growing the $10B U.S. Retail business. In addition, O’Grady has general management responsibility for one of General Mills’ three operating segments, the $2B Convenience and Food Service business.
O’Grady joined General Mills in Marketing in July 1990. He held a number of positions across the Snacks, Meals and Big G divisions. Most noteworthy was his work on Wheaties, which he led during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He was promoted to vice president in 1998, and concurrent with the General Mills acquisition of The Pillsbury Company in 2001, took the helm of the Refrigerated Baked Goods business.
Late in 2004, O’Grady joined General Mills’ Consumer Foods Sales division with responsibility for retail customers across the Midwest. His purview continued to expand, adding the high growth food outlets of Club, Target, Dollar and Drug stores a short time later. He was promoted to President for U.S. Retail Sales in 2007.
In August of 2010, O’Grady was elected senior vice president of General Mills, and assumed leadership of all remaining customer activities in the U.S. In June of 2012, he added full business accountability for the Convenience and Food Service business to his chief responsibilities.
Prior to joining General Mills, O’Grady graduated with honors from Notre Dame with a Bachelor’s of Science in chemical engineering. He worked two years as a chemical engineer for Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, Pa., before attending Harvard Business School where he earned an MBA in 1990.
Shawn lives in Minneapolis, MN with his wife, Becky and two children, Jack and Mary. He serves on the board of trustees of the General Mills Foundation and on the advisory board for Hunger-Free Minnesota. In his free time he is an avid runner.
